The mysterious Sperm whale, heavily hunted for the unique oil in its head, nevertheless is the most populous of the great whales. That unique oil is a part of a sonar system so powerful and complex that we don't understand it. Scientists still debate about the Sperm Whale's powerful acoustic sensory array. The other great whales, baleen whales that live off the shrimp and small fish, live near the surface. The Sperm spends much of its time hunting in the black depths of the deep sea. Contrary to the image presented by Moby Dick, sperm whales are actually quite shy and are more likely to simply dive to escape. (Grey whales, for example, have a much more agressive reputation.)
